The graphic nature of the eco-map highlights social strengths and social deficiencies and helps identify areas of conflicts and compatibility. It often indicates areas where change may be needed” (Cournoyer, 2000, p. 37).
•	If anyone would like to do this exercise with your family and/or have questions about this process, please let Joyce or I know. We would be happy to help you!

<title>Spirit Article: Project Hope Tutoring Provides Support</title>
<description><![CDATA[Did you know that almost all Project Hope participants are attending classes to further their education in order to meet their career goals? And, they cannot do this without our support. CUMC offers tutoring for each participant while he/she attends classes for certification in whatever field being pursued. CUMC also offers tutoring to their children if they are struggling academically. Project Hope cares, coaches, and supports the whole family as they work to better their lives.

Here are just a few quotes from our Project Hope Families:

<em>“Tutoring was good. It helped a lot and I improved my grades.” </em>
     - Percy, high school learner

<em>“Tutoring has really helped. We are very blessed because my children have gained a lot more confidence and they are improving in their classes.” </em>
    - Maribel, parent of elementary learners.

<em>“My child is doing well with his tutor and enjoys going to learn.” </em>
    - Denise, parent of elementary learner
<em>

“I know that my tutors are very interested in my success and they want to know how I did on my tests when I take them.” </em>
     - Denise, adult learner.

Project Hope needs your time and talents to help these students, whether adult, teen, or child. Commitments vary as widely as needs vary. A database is kept of possible tutors, then, as the need arises, tutors are matched with the participant. The Tutor Coach and tutor meet with the family to determine the academic needs. Length of time needed for tutoring varies as widely as the needs.

Look at your calendar for the coming school year. If you have one or two hours a week to share your talents and expertise through tutoring, contact Project Hope, Jana Grimone, <A HREF='ma&#105;&#108;&#116;&#111;&#58;&#106;ana%40&#37;&#54;3umc&#46;%&#54;3o&#37;&#54;D'>jan&#97;&#64;cu&#109;c&#46;c&#111;m</A>. Training, materials, and support are provided.

<title>Success Story: Passing it on with VBS</title>
<description>Hello Project Hope Coaches and supporters,

I just wanted to share another great story of passing it on!

Maribel did it again! I hope you enjoy looking at the photos of the Vacation Bible School in the Park that was hosted by Maribel, one of our Project Hope participants. Notice that Maribel has Luis(her husband) and her children helping. This is the second year that she has hosted the VBS and it has grown! The first year they had about 10 children and this year there were between 20-30 children in attendance. She is truly amazing!!! How Maribel got this started is by her and her children attending CUMC VBS. They started attending when they got involved with Project Hope. Maribel was so inspired by what she saw that she decided to recruit her own group of children in her neighborhood to do their own VBS. The CUMC VBS crew was willing to pass on some of the extra VBS supplies, extra t-shirts, and the decorations that were no longer needed. So, thank you CUMC Children’s Department for sharing!

I took the opportunity to recognize and reward Maribel for her hard work with a gift basket at the Project Hope Seminar yesterday. Maribel and her family are truly an inspiration to so many!

<title>Spirit Article: Share Your Gifts with Project Hope</title>
<description><![CDATA[A letter from a Project Hope Volunteer:

God has given us each gifts that we can use to help others as a practice of our faith. This is our gift to Him.

Three years ago when I, Shayne Warner, was a family coach for Project Hope, I noticed a need for some customized computer training. Since I had experience with training home users, I asked if Project Hope could benefit from my computer skills. From that conversation, the concept of our current computer class was born. The class would meet once a month to cover several applications and would be open to all Project Hope participants with beginning computer skills. The inaugural class was small and the first thing I noticed was that I needed a translator to assist me. Rick Flores, Enrique Samaniego, and Carol Deily soon stepped up to fill that need.

After a successful first year, it was decided that the computer classes would continue. The second year increased in numbers of participants, volunteers, and additional services were offered. Bob Boldt and Bobby Carnline joined the computer team to share their talents. To date, Project Hope has given out over 35 computers and many printers. Our intention is to give all Project Hope families a workstation so that they may have the tools they need to succeed.

The students come from different backgrounds and age groups but all have a desire to learn. Jerri L. said, “Because I am writing a book, the computer class has been a blessing. I have learned so much about computers… I look forward to attending the class to learn something new.” Another student that came to the class two years ago could not use the mouse and can now navigate in Word with great ease.

After each class, I leave excited and fulfilled because God has given me a gift that I can use to help other people improve their lives. I have connected with over 20 students throughout the past two years and I am getting to know their families as well. It is a blessing to me to not only see improvements in their skills but in their escalating confidence.

Christ United Methodist has blessed my family in so many ways not the least of which includes offering amazing mission opportunities in which to participate. We are excited about our third year of computer classes. They will begin in September 2007. If you would like to see where your gifts can be used, contact Jana Grimone at <A HREF='ma&#105;&#108;&#116;&#111;&#58;&#106;ana%40&#37;&#54;3umc&#46;%&#54;3o&#37;&#54;D'>jan&#97;&#64;cu&#109;c&#46;c&#111;m</A> and she will find a place for you within Project Hope.

         <title>Spirit Article: The “Pew-Potatoes” find Project Hope</title>
<description>My wife and I were what we called “Pew-Potatoes” – we regularly attended Sunday service, helped with “The House on the Corner” and recognized most of the regulars that set around us in church. We had often talked about getting involved but never quite got around to it. We are both retired and had time on our hands.

One Sunday morning my wife was reading the bulletin and notices a request for someone to help with a computer class once a week in the mornings for Project Hope. She punched me in the ribs and asked if I might be interested. I thought I might give it a try.

I contacted the director of Project Hope and was signed up. I joined three to four other church members in a kind of hybrid class of Windows, Office, resume writing and hone of interviewing and job skills for 10-12 Hurricane Katrina survivors. I was pleasantly surprised to see and experience the intra-working between the students and teachers – all were enjoying the experience. The students were very receptive to any suggestion we made. Personally, I believe I received more from them than they received from me – this is a common tread within Project Hope.

During this time we noticed the director needed some help with filing tasks, so my wife signs up to do various clerical tasks while we taught the class. This also points out another characteristic – there is plenty tasks to worked.

The director found out I had a considerable background in Excel, she approached me to help her with various reports – this has led to developing and monitoring various Project Hope tasks and it keeps me busy while doing something constructive.

The last half-year my wife, Bob Chambers and myself also volunteered to be coaches to one of the Project Hope participants. All of us have enjoyed helping and watching this individual become more and more self-sufficient and confident. After each meeting she would always tell us how thankful and grateful she is for our help, we in turn try to convince her we receive more encouragement from her than she receives from us. She recently interviewed and was hired by a medical office.

There are numerous other items I could site where we, the coaches, have gained spiritually from our involvement with Project Hope. In short, I would encourage each of you to look into how you might contribute, I guarantee you will enjoy the experience and get more out of it than you contribute.

Bob and Margaret Boldt

PS: We now know a lot more of CUMC staff and members than previously and feel involved.

Because I am writing a book, the computer class has been a blessing, I have learned so much about computers that has helped me along the way, such as how to set up files, copy and paste, add and delete, move things, save things, and so much more. Shayne Warner is an excellent teacher, she is very patient and makes learning clear and easy to understand. Each month I look forward to attending the class to learn something new. I thank Christ United Methodist Church, Project Hope, and Shayne for this opportunity.</em>

<title>Project Hope News Up and Running!</title>
<description><![CDATA[Welcome to the "News" section of the Project Hope website! We will use this area to post announcements, testimonials, and news items about Project Hope, or of interest to its members.

To get the ball rolling, I'll be posting some items from the last few months. (I'm really publishing these all on August 21st, but with clever software tricks they have all been backdated to the original dates.)

If you have something to post or have an idea on how to improve the Project Hope website, contact Jana Grimone (<a href="javascript:location='mailto:\u006a\u0061\u006e\u0061\u0040\u0063\u0075\u006d\u0063\u002e\u0063\u006f\u006d';void 0"><script type="text/javascript">document.write('\u006a\u0061\u006e\u0061\u0040\u0063\u0075\u006d\u0063\u002e\u0063\u006f\u006d')</script></a>) or myself.
